Important Tips on Using Microsoft Image Backup Utility

Doing Multiple Backups Using Same USB Hard Disk:

Every time you run image backup on the same PC it will overwrite the previous backup unless you use a different USB hard drive!

However, it is very much possible to store backups of multiple computers on the same external drive. Windows backup stores the file backups in a folder named after the machine-name on the target, but each PC must have a unique name.  Image backups are stored inside WindowsImageBackup\<MachineNameFolder> on the target. So, none of these will be overwritten since the machine names are unique.

Also, do not move the backup folders to other folders since that way the backup program may not find it when you are trying to perform a restore.

To confirm/rename the PC’s machine name in Windows 8:

1. In Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, open the charms bar from either your Start screen or desktop, and click/tap on the Settings charm.
2. Click/tap on PC and devices on the left side.
3. Click/tap on PC info on the left side of "PC and devices", and click/tap on the Rename button under the PC section on the right side.
3. Type in a new name you want for your PC, and click/tap on Save.

To confirm/rename the PC’s machine name in Windows 10:

1. In Windows 10. click/tap on the Start button on the taskbar or press the Windows key to open the Start menu, click/tap on the Settings link at the bottom left.

2. Click/tap on About on the left side, and click/tap on Rename PC on the right side.
