SearXNG: A MetaSearch Engine That Protects Your Privacy and Minimizes Advertising Algorithms

As an IT college professor, I do a LOT of research using Web search.  Coming up with engaging content and effective assignments is sometimes a daunting task, and the last thing I want is ineffective or biased search results hindering my work.  Of course, there are useful tools to help my search efforts, and now with AI, things just got a lot easier.  For example, by aggregating results from multiple search engines, SearXNG (pronounced “searching”) offers users a comprehensive and unbiased perspective on their queries. Its open-source nature allows for customization, enabling individuals to tailor the tool to their specific needs or even host their own instance for complete control over their data.

Reasons for Self-Hosting

In my case, after playing with a public instance of SearXNG, I decided to set up a home server and host my own instance.  I was wanting to set up a home server for a while, but this pushed me to do it. Besides having my own "private cloud" (post on this subject coming soon), there are some advantages to having my own search instance as opposed to just using a public source:

• I have complete control over my data: Hosting my own instance ensures that my personal information stays entirely under my control, alleviating any concerns about third-party tracking or misuse.
• I can customize it to my specific needs: Since SearXNG is open-source, I’ve been able to adapt the tool to fit my unique workflows and preferences.
• My privacy is enhanced: By steering clear of mainstream search engines and their tracking practices, my self-hosted instance guarantees maximum confidentiality for my online activity.
• I enjoy unbiased search results: Running my own instance means my searches are free from advertising algorithms or commercial interference, allowing me to focus on a pure, distraction-free search experience.
